Trio of Bearcats finish strong in Kaloust Open

VESTAL, N.Y.  Junior Joe Bonaldi took third place at the 149 weight class, highlighting the Binghamton wrestling teams performance at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open on Sunday at the Events Center. The meet brought over 400 wrestlers from 30 teams across the nation to the Binghamton campus. There was no team scoring.

Bonaldi was one of three Bearcat wrestlers who advance to the semifinals against some of the top talent in the nation. Fellow juniors David White (125) and Tyler Deuel (Hwt.) finished fourth in their respective weight classes.

Bonaldi won his first four matches before losing his semifinal bout to nationally-ranked Chris Villalonga of Cornell (by fall at 5:37). He bounced back, however, to take a 5-2 decision over Kevin Moylan of Princeton in the third-place match.

White finished 3-2 on the day, which culminated with a 10-7 setback against Scott Delvecchio of Rutgers in the third-place match. Deuel, who finished 2-2, lost a 6-4 decision to Jon Gingrich of Penn State in his third-place match.

I thought today was something to build on at this point of the season, head coach Mark Dernlan said. It was great to have all of the top teams that we did come onto campus. I thought we had some pretty good individual performances.

Before the event started, a brief ceremony was held to honor former Binghamton wrestler Jonathan Kaloust, for whom the Bearcat Open was renamed in honor of. He became a Navy SEAL officer after graduation but was tragically killed in the line of duty earlier this year.

Renaming the tournament after Jonathan was the right thing to do, Dernlan said. He will always be a part of our (Bearcat) family here and for this event to be held right before Veterans Day was very fitting.

Binghamton heads to Cornell for a dual match on Nov. 23 at 6:30 p.m.
