Bearcats wrestling excited to start season in EIWA

VESTAL -- The wrestling squad is gearing up for its 2013-14 campaign. In his second year with the team, Head Coach Matt Dernlan expects the growing pains to be over and his team feels the same way.

There are some changes to come for BU, who opens up the season Sunday when they host the Kaloust Open. Members of the most prestigious wrestling programs in the nation, including Princeton, Rutgers and Maryland, will join a group of close to 500 competitors.

The major event is the first of what the Bearcats hope to be many, as they begin a new era. This season will be the team's first in the EIWA conference.

Head Coach Matt Dernlan says, "The EIWA is the second toughest wrestling conference in the country so it's going to challenge us from a competitive level and on a national level. I really hope it pushes the needle forward with the program."

Redshirt Senior Cody Reed adds, "Every weight class is going to have five or six guys ranked, where as last year there were two or three guys ranked per weight class. It's definitely going to be a big step up and it'll get us ready for the end of the year."

The tournament begins at 9 AM Sunday at the Events Center.
