BU Men, Women gear up for basketball season

VESTAL -- The eve of the return of NCAA basketball to the Southern Tier is upon us, and both the Bearcat men and women play host to a pair of teams Friday at the Events Center.

The men open their season against Loyola at 8 PM. As far as what to expect from Tommy Dempsey's squad this season, BU is not setting any goals for win totals. The team is just going to take it as it comes. That said, the head man is still excited for what the 2013-14 campaign will bring.

"I think we are going to be fun to watch. You're going to scratch your heads sometimes because we're so young and we're going to have nights when we probably don't play well. But, I think we're going to have a lot of nights where we play really well. I think we're capable of doing that. I think we have to try to maximize those nights over the course of the year," says Dempsey.

On the women's side, they'll host Buffalo in the first half of the doubleheader at 5:30 PM Friday. Head Coach Nicole Scholl's biggest challenge is filling the shoes left by Jasbriel Swain's summer transfer.

On a team that is mostly underclassmen, the onus falls on some of the older players, at least to start.

"There's a lot of pressure on Sherae (Swinson) this year. I think it's more a matter of what she's putting on herself. She had a great season last year and I think she has the opportunity to have an even better one this year," explains Scholl.

Junior Forward Sherae Swinson adds, "I have been working on being the go-to person and coach has given me a lot of confidence to believe in myself, but I do have teammates around me that have been working hard as well. If I have a bad game they'll be there to pick me up. It won't just be about me this season. It'll be about all of us."

Swinson averaged 9.9 points last season and was named to the third team all conference.
