Casino Gambling: Possible Job Impacts of Proposition One

While the majority of the focus on election day will be the races for public office there will also be six propositions on the back of the ballot, one of which could greatly impact our area.

Proposition One if passed will allow for four gambling casinos in New York State including one in the Southern Tier.

A possible choice for an upstate casino is Tioga Downs.

Tuesday political officials from the area rallied to show their support for the proposition.

"We know that if we can get people to stay in our hotels and B&Bs that they will spend their money in restaurants, on gas, shopping, entertainment, and more," said Stella Reschke, Director of Tourism for Tioga County.

"It will bring thousands of jobs to our state, it will also provide hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue to pay for our schools and will provide much needed tax relief for struggling homeowners," said Dale Weston, Chair, Tioga County Legislature.

If Tioga Downs becomes a full casino economic development authorities expect to add 175 jobs to the casino staff in addition to 300 construction jobs.

And Tioga County officials say a casino could spin off up to eleven hundred jobs.

Opponents of Proposition One claim the wording of the initiative only highlights the positives and not the negatives casino gaming would bring.
