High School Students Make a Difference, Help Others Celebrate Season

In Vestal, high school students teamed up with
elementary students Saturday to celebrate Make a Difference Day.

The younger students were able to learn peace songs and
make a difference in the lives of the areas elderly by helping them celebrate the season with donated hand painted pumpkins.

The school has been hosting the event for 17 years and faculty say they've seen the effects come full circle.

"I think it's important for our elementary age students to see that it's important to give back to the community," said Christi Smith, the PEACE Club Advisor and Vestal School Counselor. "Certainly our high school students have learned that over the years and they have come back each year to work with the elementary students. By the time those kids get up here to the high school, they're in the mode of giving back to the community. Not only do they learn about making themselves feel good but helping others in the community as well."

This year, the Vestal Fire Department was also on hand to teach the children about fire safety. The kids got the chance to dress in fireman's garb, and use fire extinguishers and water hoses.
