Teri Rennia on City's Youth Beureau
10/22/2013 (Updated 6:52:35 PM)Democratic mayoral candidate Teri Rennia responding Tuesday to her opponents comments he would like to eliminate the city's youth bureau.
Rennia was joined by youth and youth advocates Tuesday to speak on the issue.
The city council president says there is one person in the youth bureau who is paid $36,400.
She says the youth bureau is responsible for various programs for youth like after school, leadership and exercise.
Republican candidate Rich David says he would like to eliminate the position and see the funds possibly split between the counties youth bureau, city police department and parks and recreation department which he says all serve the city's youth.
"Our youth bureau serves a function that is not going to be solved with the addition of police officers. It serves a function that is going to lead to more long term solutions here in our City to the problem we have and that is what makes it so important," said Teri Rennia, Democratic Mayoral candidate.
"We do want to provide after school opportunities for our children. My issue is does having one person who reports directly to the mayor and has a very small budget accomplish these goals and I believe the answer to that is no," said Rich David, Republican mayoral candidate.
Rennia says the county's youth bureau doesn't provide programing for youth but is responsible for distributing funds from the Office of Children and Family Services.
