Tree Trimming Latest Mayoral Campaign Issue

The sparring continues between the two candidates for Binghamton mayor.

Democrat Teri Rennia responded angrily to a flier Republican Rich David sent out about NYSEG's tree trimming, which became a controversial issue in June when some residents were upset by how much of trees were removed to keep them free from power lines.

David's flier accused Rennia of inaction on the trimming program. Rennia said David's charge is untrue.

"The best quote that I can give you about the tree trimming was the one that came from my 11-year-old daughter yesterday when she saw the flier, looked at it and said, 'Mom, this is not good. Mr. David is lying about you,'" said Rennia.

"There's a difference between not liking something and it not being accurate. It's unfortunate that she doesn't like it but those were her quotes. And that was the position she had at the time. My concern is whether it's the trees or other issues, her position continues to evolve," said David.

Rennia said city council is considering a petition to replace the city's tree-trimming job slot with a position for an arborist.
