BU Women's soccer win streak ends with loss to Hartford

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Hartford (9-4-3, 4-2 AE) scored twice in the games first 19 minutes and posted a 2-0 win over Binghamton (7-5-2, 2-2-1 AE) in an America East womens soccer game Thursday night from the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Sophomore Elise Galipo opened the scoring with a wide-angled shot to the far post just 6:21 into the game. Galipo had the ball on the left flank outside the box and struck a hard shot that carried into the upper right netting. Then just over 12 minutes later, America East scoring leader Chanel Johnson notched her seventh goal of the season. She sent a ball from 30 yards in the middle of the field out that bounced once on the turf and eluded BU keeper Carrie Martin.

Neither team scored over the remaining 71:26 with intermittent rain adding to the second-half elements.
Hartford held a 13-11 advantage in shots.

We were pressing the whole game but we just werent able to climb back into it, head coach Sarah McClellan said. We have the talent and the team commitment but well need to be more competitive and play with more urgency on Sunday against a tough Stony Brook team.

The Bearcats generated only a handful of good scoring opportunities. With 12:21 left in the first half, freshman forward Michele Galvin got her foot on a cross from the right side but her shot on the doorstep was saved by Hartford keeper Jessica Jurg. Midway through the second half, BU had another solid opportunity when sophomore Samantha Crane broke free on the right wing and dribbled in on the endline before cutting a pass back to BU leading scorer Stephani Church. But Churchs shot from eight yards out went directly to Jurg. One of Jurgs toughest saves was a quick reaction stop after a cross from senior Conor OBrien banked off a Hawks defender inside the six-yard box.

Junior keeper Gaby Gold, who replaced Martin in the 37th minute, made two saves and intercepted a handful of other dangerous Hartford balls in the box.

The Bearcats, who slipped into seventh place in the conference standings, host Stony Brook at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
