Johnson City's Democratic Mayoral candidate Barrett Esworthy announced his plan to lower property taxes in the Village Tuesday.
Esworthy said he plans to offer tax property breaks to residents and business owners. He wants to make downtown Johnson City property tax free to attract more businesses and promises to lower property taxes by 5% across the board if elected mayor.
"One thing is for certain, property taxes are not sustainable. They're not going to generate enough revenue for us to keep the Village going. They're blatantly unfair to Village residents and owners who are paying them," Esworthy said.
Esworthy said he plans to make up for the revenue loss by exploring options like increasing sales, business and income tax as well as consolidating police and fire departments with other municipalities.
