Bearcats rally for OT win

ORONO, Maine - Sophomore forward Stephani Church scored the game-winner with 1:36 left in the first overtime and Binghamton womens soccer (7-4-2, 2-1-1 AE) overcame an early 2-0 deficit to knock off first-place Maine (6-4-4, 3-1-1 AE) 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The win, BUs second in a row, provided three important points in the crowded America East standings as the Bearcats hit the halfway point in the league schedule. Binghamton began the day tied for sixth place. The top six teams advance to the conference tournament.

Church reeled in a long ball off the foot of classmate Katherine Corcoran, dribbled into the box and slotted a right-footed shot into the lower left corner past the rushing Black Bears keeper. It was her team-high fifth goal of the season and fourth game-winner - tied for most in the America East.

It was a great win for us today, especially after being down 2-0, head coach Sarah McClellan said. We came out a little flat but the team did a great job to bounce back. They showed resolve and a commitment to each other to work hard and battle back. We got contributions from everyone and Church showed great composure to finish the chance in overtime. We kept pressing and wanted to take advantage of every opportunity because we needed these points and Maine is a good opponent. Were just happy to get the win after such a long bus trip and were excited to keep the momentum going at home.

Corcoran tied the game earlier with a beautiful left-footed blast in the 58th minute. She dribbled to her left just outside the box and launched a 22-yard shot that sailed over the keepers head and into the upper netting. Senior forward Conor OBrien drew an assist on the play.

Junior keeper Gaby Gold made several big saves in the second half to keep Maine at bay. Gold replaced starter Carrie Martin in the 23rd minute after the Black Bears scored to take a 2-0 lead. She kept the hosts off the scoreboard over the final 76 minutes and was credited with four saves.

Maine scored just 3:37 into the contest after a feed in behind the Bearcats defense. The Black Bears doubled their lead 19 minutes later after a corner kick. But BU got on the board in the 26th minute after a corner kick. Freshman forward Michele Galvin fed sophomore midfielder Rebecca Raber, who netted her second goal of the season.

The shots were even at 14-14.

The Bearcats now play three of their final four regular season games at home beginning with a matchup against Hartford Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
