Governor Andrew Cuomo declared October 8, 2013 as Annual Firefighter Appreciation Day.
This week marks fire prevention week. On Tuesday, government officials took part in the 16th Annual Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial Ceremony in Albany. The names of nine firefighters who paid the ultimate sacrifice were added to the memorial this year.
"We look behind us on this wall and behind every single one of those names is a story of a family that had their entire lives changed forever because of not one of these nine families will ever be the same and I think that's something as citizen and government should remind ourselves every day," said Lt. Governor Robert Duffy.
Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka of the West Webster Fire Department were among the fire fighters added to the memorial this year. They were killed while fighting a fire on Christmas Eve when a man opened fire.
