Scholar Athletes Score U-E Award

A sports team achieving scholar athlete status is a great honor that takes a lot of hard work and dedication.  Now, imagine how much it takes for every varsity team in one school to have that status.

Union-Endicott School District is proud accept the "School of Distinction", awarded by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. Every single U-E varsity athletic team achieved scholar athlete status, which means a GPA of 90 or higher.

UE Varsity Boys Lacrosse coach John Stank said he's proud to see athletes excel in the classroom as well as on the field.

"We always put an emphasis on education first.  That's what they're here for. Athletics is great, keeps them well rounded but that's what we strive for, academics first," said Stank.

"We told the kids, focus on improving an extra five points or an extra four points. We didn't want to forget about the kids who went from a 70 to an 80 or a 65 to a 75.  As long as that effort is there, we are equally as proud," said UE Athletic Director Josh Gannon.

There are about 7000 schools in New York, only about 30 receive this distinction.
