BU Women lose in 2OT heartbreaker

VESTAL, N.Y. Alexa Quaranta scored the game-winning goal 6:47 into the second sudden-death overtime period, leading UMBC (6-4-2, 1-1-0 AE) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (5-4-2, 0-1-1 AE) in an America East womens soccer game on Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The loss snapped the Bearcats two-game unbeaten streak.

Quaranta was stationed just outside the box when a shot by UMBC caromed right to her. She then got behind the defense and fired the ball just inside the right post. It was her third goal of the season.

Binghamton outshot UMBC 15-7 for the game, including 12-4 after halftime. Still, the Bearcats were unable to find the back of the net.
I thought it was a really tough battle, head coach Sarah McClellan said. I thought our team really worked hard in the second half and it started to pay off with our passing. You hate to use the word unlucky but thats sometimes soccer. We need to use this game to gain mental toughness and put away our chances earlier in the game.

Up until Quarantas goal, the Bearcats had gone over 300 minutes without surrendering a goal. Lauren Kadet of UMBC, however, finished with five saves in the winning effort.

Binghamton heads to Albany next Thursday for a 7 p.m. game.
