Former White House, UN Advisor, and BU Alum Weighs in on Looming Government Shutdown
9/30/2013 (Updated 11:01:38 PM)Eric Schwartz, who earned his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science at Binghamton University in 1979, returned to his alma mater to speak on public policy and international relations.
The former White House Aid weighed in on what he thought of the impending government shutdown. He thinks a shutdown is the wrong approach to a debate over a serious issue.
"If we can take the position that we can in a cavalier way, just let the government shut down, I think it communicates a very
pernicious signal. These are very important issues, but they should not be commingled with the decision on whether or not the government should continue to run," said Schwartz.
During his 25 year career in public service, Schwartz served as an Assistant U.S. Secretary of State, and was involved in a number of U.N. projects.
He is currently the Dean of the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Policy at the University of Minnesota.
