Vestal Board Presents Tentative Budget

Town Supervisor John Schaffer says Vestal is in good fiscal shape and moving forward.

Schaffer presented the boards tentative $10,631,072 budget Monday evening.  The 2014 budget shows a 2.1 percent increase in spending from last year's.  Taxpayers with homes assessed at $100,000 would owe an additional $13.16 in property taxes next year if the tentative budget is passed as is. 

Last year, residents saw a 4.5% property tax increase but Schaffer says they were able to reduce that number this year by cutting spending on utilities and cutting back on town vehicles.  He says they were able to increase funding in some areas as well.

"Books for the library, keeping our museums open.  Keeping our recreation department staff.  We're not laying people off, we're not even looking to do that now.  We just trimmed, what I call fluff.  We trimmed off what we could and we're still looking," said Town Supervisor John Schaffer.

There will be a public hearing on the budget on November 6th.
