Dementia Study at Binghamton University Seeks Volunteers

What could your speech pattern say about your chances of developing dementia? That's a question researchers at Binghamton University and UHS want to find out.
They are looking for 50 people diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's as well as 50 cognitively normal people to take part in the study in which they would have a sample of their speech recorded when describing a picture. producing speech requires multiple areas of the brain.

"If there is some damage in one of these parts then it seems intuitive that there ought to be an identifiable fingerprint left in the speech pattern," said Dr. Dave Schaffer, a professor of bioengineering at BU who is conducting the study.

"One of the difficulties right now that the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) has is identifying the right patients who probably have Alzheimer's so that they can do adequate studies to determine if the treatment option is really going to work," said UHS Director of Geriatrics Dr. Shawn Berkowitz.

Once the researchers gather their samples it should take between six to nine months to analyze and see if there is a pattern in hopes of developing a diagnostic test for early-stage dementia.
