Local Unemployment Numbers Decrease
9/24/2013 (Updated 8:01:35 PM)Unemployment rates continue to show more people are finding work in the Greater Binghamton area.
According to the New York Department of Labor Binghamton's August unemployment rate was 7.5 percent which is down from the 8.7 percent that it was a year ago.
In all, the number of unemployed in Greater Binghamton went from 10,100 people in August of 2012 to 8,700 in August of this year.
In August, the state brought in 22,700 private sector jobs. The increase has been slow in the area but things are looking up.
"Locally we've had a little bit more trouble. We haven't been on the recovery path as long as the state has. I think it's only been the last three months that we've shown in private sector gains, which is promising because we're finally catching up to what we've been seeing statewide," said Regional Labor Market Analyst, Christian Harris.
The state's private sector job count has gone up by 126,000 jobs over the last year.
