BU Men's Soccer drops 2OT contest
9/21/2013 (Updated 10:34:28 PM)EASTON, Pa. Alec Golini scored 2:50 into the second sudden-death overtime period, leading unbeaten Lafayette (2-0-5) to a 2-1 win over Binghamton (2-4-1) in a non-conference mens soccer game on Saturday afternoon at Oakes Stadium. The loss was the second straight for the Bearcats, who have been unable to hold a lead in each of the setbacks.
Golini was in the right place at the right time on the game winner. A shot just seconds earlier by Tom McCuctheon hit the post but bounced right back to Golini, who shot the ball into the net.
Despite getting outshot 13-4, Binghamton held the lead for much of the match. Senior forward Marts Reid-Warden gave the Bearcats the lead in the 17th minute when he finished off a cross from junior back Matt McCoy. It was the first goal allowed by the Leopards in nearly 300 minutes.
With just 17 minutes left in regulation, however, Lafayette was awarded a penalty kick. Peter Adubato converted the attempt, deadlocking the match at 1-1.
The Leopards had all three shot attempts in the overtime periods.
In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Stefano Frantellizzi made seven saves.
To come home with no points is something we are very disappointed about, head coach Paul Marco said. We let ourselves down today.
Binghamton returns home to face St. Peters Tuesday at 7 p.m.
NOTES: McCoy now has two assists in the past three games Reid-Wardens goal was his first of the season and second of his career. His first career goal came against Houston Baptist in 2009.
