Newark Valley Will Appeal 3.5 Million Dollar Jury Award

A new development on a story that Fox 40 was first to report Wednesday night: The Newark Valley School District plans to appeal the three and a half million dollar damage award to a former teacher who sued for slander.
Lyndsey Wilcox says she lost wages, future earnings, her reputation, and suffered mental anguish when school administrators falsely stated that she had agreed to resign in March of 2008.
That was when her then-boyfriend, Todd Broxmeyer, a field hockey coach, was charged and later convicted of sex offenses involving female students.
Wilcox argued that she knew nothing of Broxmeyer's criminal activities, and was wrongfully accused that she failed to report his behavior.
The attorney for the district calls the verdict "excessive and unwarranted".
