City Council Tables Resolution

A resolution on the table at Wednesday night's Binghamton City Council meeting  to urge the county to stay away from  privatization when it comes to public transportation.

In the county executive's budget address last week, Debbie Preston  said they would consider the option to cut costs. At Wednesday's meeting, Council President Teri Rennia and Lea Webb both spoke against it, saying it could lead to layoffs and changes in services city residents and students can't afford.

However, the resolution was tabled as some council members say they are neither for or against privatization, they just want to learn more about what it could mean for the city.

"I think they can find, maybe better ways to do some of the routes.  Maybe there's part of the route that shouldn't be done first thing in the morning or late at night.  I think there's some money we can save there.  It looks like Nassau County saved quite a bit of money, maybe 50 million dollars the first year," said Council Member Joe Mihalko.

Deputy Executive Bijoy Datta told Fox 40 Wednesday they are working on a RFP but nothing has been released.
