BU Heart Attack Risk Study Underway
9/13/2013 (Updated 9/14/2013 1:01:09 AM)Are you at risk of a heart attack? We hope not, but research at Binghamton University could lead to a test to better answer that question.
A two-year, $418,000 grant that a BU professor will split with a Temple University researcher will help fund a study that hopes to lead to a nanoparticle that can be injected into the blood stream and help analyze plaque that forms on arteries.
"What our contrast agent is designed to do is detect the molecular changes and cellular changes in the plaque in order to catch the plaque before it bursts," said Dr. Amber Doiron, assistant professor of bioengineering at Binghamton University.
According to Binghamton University, about 30 percent of deaths worldwide can be attributed to hardening of the arteries.
