59 Vestal Homeowners Offered FEMA Flood Buyouts

59 vestal homeowners are weighing whether to have their flood-damaged houses bought out by FEMA.

This after letters went out Wednesday informing them of that option. The letter explains how 100 percent of their buyout will be covered for them. Vestal will pay for all costs up front, then be reimbursed by both FEMA and New York state. The homes will then become green spaces and the town has a plan for them.

"We do have a program out there that you can adopt the property around your house for a garden. No permanent structures can be on it but if you want to put a pool on it or something you can. And we're going to offer it probably for a dollar," said Vestal Supervisor John Schaffer.

Schaffer says all FEMA buyout applications need to be filled out and submitted by Cctober 28th.
