Broome County Hosts Car Seat Check at Lourdes Hospital

The Broome County Health Department held a free car seat check event Saturday to check the safety of children in car seats and to inform parents of car safety.

The event was overseen by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians who checked the quality of the car seats, weighed and measured children to make sure the seats were appropriate, and gave out free educational materials on child safety.

"We see hundreds of car seats every year and probably 85-90% of them are misused," Traffic Safety Coordinator of the Broome County Health Department said. "So that's a lot of unsafe kids riding in vehicles. Our goal is to educate parents and empower them to be able to use the car seats correctly."

Organizers of the event say they hope that parents will walk away with helpful tips and be better informed on how to keep their child safe.
