3rd Annual Humane Society Duck Derby
9/7/2013 (Updated 10:48:32 PM)The Broome County Humane Society hosted it's 3rd Annual Duck Derby Saturday on the Chenango River. People paid $5 to adopt a rubber duck.
The ducks raced down the river competing for $5,000 in cash prizes.
Karen Matson, Executive Director of the Broome County Humane Society says the derby is one of the largest fundraisers for the non profit organization and also a big event for the people who attend.
"This is a huge event for the community," she said. "It does a couple of things... one, it helps us support the animals everyone knows needs help, but two, it also increases the awareness of the need in our community. Right now our intake levels are about 20% higher than what we predicted for this year, so there are a lot of animals we still need to save."
Proceeds from today's event will go towards food, shelter and medical costs for the animals.
