New Year New Name

Tuesday was the first day of classes at SUNY Broome  and, of course, the first day of using the new name for what used to be known as Broome Community College.

Student enrollment is up one percent from a year ago for a total of about 6,000. According to officials at the school, there seems to be a new focus on working toward a specific career.

"I was really pleasantly surprised that every student, 24 of them, had a career goal in mind. Some of them immediately after Broome and some were talking about getting their doctorates (degree)," said Francis Battisti, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer at SUNY Broome.

"I'm happy that I can study what I actually want and take more interest and a lot more effort into my classes. I'm looking forward to it," said first-year student Steven Mandeville.

Battisti says the school is also adding new programs for 2014, including three in hospitality, and others in liberal arts and science, engineering, technology, and math.
