Keeping Bears Away
9/3/2013 (Updated 6:55:26 PM)Some advice for area residents about encounters with black bear following a weekend black bear sighting in Vestal and Main Street in Endicott.
Village police are urging residents to remove any food-related items that might draw bears to your backyard.
Authorities say the two most important steps in keeping black bears away is the proper storage of garbage and removal of bird feeders during periods when bears are active.
If you see a bear, don't panic. Bears are more likely to be afraid of you, than you of them. Keep your distance. Never approach, surround, or attempt to touch a bear. If you feel threatened, back away slowly, and do not run.
Leave a clear escape route for the bear. If a bear will not leave an area, make loud noises, from a distance.
