B-Mets start last homestand with win

BINGHAMTON, NY  Darin Gorski tossed seven shutout innings and allowed only two base hits as the Binghamton Mets shut out the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 3-0 on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. The offense packed all three of their runs into the sixth inning as Binghamton collected their 85th win of the season.
Gorski faced one over the minimum in his 13th start of the season with the B-Mets. The only frame he faced more than three hitters was the first, when Adam Loewen knocked a two-out double. The only other hit he allowed was a leadoff single to Andy Burns in the fourth inning. Two batters later he was erased with an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Deck McGuire also had success against his opposing hitters in the first five innings of the game. He did not give up a base hit through the first five innings, and only allowed two walks during that time. His luck changed in the sixth inning. Joe Bonfe led things off by bouncing a ball to third base. The throw from Andy Burns went wide and pulled Kevin Ahrens off the base, as Bonfe reached on the throwing error. Alonzo Harris followed with his second walk of the night to put runners on first and second with nobody out.

Danny Muno moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt, and Josh Rodriguez immediately got ahead in the count, 3-0. After the third ball, catcher Chris Schaeffer elected to intentionally walk Rodriguez to load the bases. Ball four however went sailing over Schaeffers head allowing Bonfe to score the first run of the game. One batter later Travis Taijeron delivered with Binghamtons first base hit of the night. He lined a 2-1 pitch down the left field and scored both runners to give Binghamton a 3-0 lead.

The lead was plenty for the Binghamton pitching staff. Gorski struck out five over seven innings and earned his sixth win as a B-Met. Major League rehabber Frank Francisco threw a scoreless eighth inning, and Jeff Walters sealed the deal with a scoreless ninth to pick up his franchise-record 38th save.

The B-Mets (85-54) and Fisher Cats (67-71) continue their four-game series on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. First pitch is at 7:05 PM as the B-Mets send RHP Greg Peavey to the mound against RHP Marcus Walden for New Hampshire. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show is set to begin at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
