B-Mets get best of rain and Baysox

BOWIE, MD  The Binghamton Mets pounded out 13 hits and defeated the Bowie Baysox, 7-4, on a rain-soaked Wednesday night at Prince Georges Stadium. All nine B-Mets collected at least one hit in a contest that included a one hour, fifty-eight minute rain delay.

Facing Bowie starter Mike Wright for the first time this season, the B-Mets grabbed the lead in the second. Wright, the owner of the second-best ERA in the Eastern League, put himself in trouble by walking Wilfredo Tovar and Richard Lucas to start the inning. Danny Muno put Binghamton on the board by lining an RBI single to left and Lucas doubled the lead by scoring on a wild pitch.

B-Mets starter Mark Cohoon preserved the lead with a scoreless second inning. The southpaw worked around a two-out single to post a shutout frame as the rain turned from a drizzle to a steady pour.

Josh Rodriguez flied out to start the third inning before crew chief Joe Born summoned the tarp on the field. After waiting through the nearly two-hour rain delay, Zech Zinicola took the hill and collected the final two outs of the inning.

Binghamton added to their lead in the fifth. Muno scorched a double down the right-field line to start the inning. Three batters later, Allan Dykstra punched a single to left. Muno rounded third with a full head of steam and scored safely after knocking the ball out of catcher Brian Wards mitt. The B-Mets padded their lead in the sixth on an RBI double by Alonzo Harris.

The lengthy delay also put an end to Cohoons start after two innings. Hamilton Bennett took over and posted two scoreless frames, before surrendering a two-out RBI single to Niuman Romero in the fifth. Jim Fuller made his first appearance since being activated from the disabled list and struck out three, keeping the Baysox off the board in the sixth and seventh.

The B-Mets capped their offensive night with three runs in the eighth off Tim Bascom. Lucas provided an RBI single, Harris added with a sac fly and Josh Rodriguez put a bow on the frame with another sac fly.

Ryan Fraser allowed a run on two hits in the eighth and nearly let a five-run lead slip away in the ninth. After a hit batter and an error, Britton ripped a two-run double down the right-field line, cutting Binghamtons lead to three. Caleb Joseph followed with a single, bringing the tying run to the plate. Fraser silenced Bowies comeback bid by inducing Seth Loman to fly out to center to end the game.

Bennett (1-0) allowed one run over three innings, his longest outing of the season, to collect his first career Double-A victory. Wright (11-3) surrendered two runs over 2-1/3 innings in a rain-shorted start, suffering his first loss since June 24.
