Early trouble dooms B-Mets

AKRON, OH  The Akron Aeros scored six times in the first two innings and defeated the Binghamton Mets, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park. The B-Mets mustered six singles in the finale and suffered their first four-game series loss of the season.
Things unraveled early for B-Mets starter Greg Peavey. Ronny Rodriguez bounced an infield single behind the mound and moved from first to third when Jesus Aguilars two-out soft liner to short eluded Wilfredo Tovars glove. Tyler Holt cashed in on the break and put Akron on the board with an RBI single to right-center field. A wild pitch brought Aguilar home and Giovanny Urshela capped the three-run inning with an RBI single to center.

Binghamton responded against Aeros starter Cody Anderson in the second. With Tovar at second following a failed double steal attempt, Blake Forsythe flared a two-out single to the right-field alley, plating the B-Mets first run of the game.

The Aeros picked up where they left off in the second, throwing up another three-run frame. With the first two runners on base, Rodriguez dropped a bunt in front of the plate. Catcher Blake Forsythe pounced on the roller, but fired high to first, allowing Matt Lawson to score. Adam Abraham and Jesus Aguilar tacked on with sac flies, kicking Akrons lead to 6-1.

Binghamton got back on the scoreboard without a hit in the fifth. Anderson walked the first two batters he faced before getting the hook. Reliever Bryce Stowell induced Joe Bonfe to bounce into a double play on the first pitch he threw, pushing Tovar to third. The righty then unleashed a wild pitch while walking Danny Muno, along Tovar to come home, cutting the deficit to four.

After allowing eight of the first eleven batters he faced to reach, Peavey finished on a high note. The right-hander retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced, including 12 straight to cap his day. Chase Huchingson closed Binghamtons pitching tab with two scoreless innings of relief.

In a trend that encompassed the four-game series, the B-Mets failed to break through against the Aeros bullpen. Stowell capped two shutout innings with four straight strikeouts, Kyle Crockett silenced the B-Mets over two frames and Jose Flores posted a perfect ninth. Outside of Will Roberts piggy-back performance on Saturday, the Aeros bullpen allowed just one unearned run over 16-1/3 innings of relief during the four-game set.

Peavey (2-2) allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits over six innings in the loss. Stowell (3-1) earned the official scorer-awarded victory.
