Binghamton Earns a Leg Up for Federal Funding

Binghamton gets a big advantage when it comes to applying for federal funding.

The city has earned the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development "Preferred Sustainability Status" designation, which gives Binghamton preference when it comes to applying for federal programs through HUD, DOT, or the EPA.

Binghamton was only one of two communities in the state, and one of 90 through out the country to receive this designation. The city earned the distinction after winning a $500,000 community planning challenge grant from three federal agencies.

"Well again we know that we don't have the local resources to accomplish what we want. We're always going to have to access federal and state programs, foundation grants. Now we've just given everyone in the community a leg up when they compete for those federal programs, and that's something we're really proud of," said Tarik Abdelazim the Binghamton Director of Planning Housing and Community Development.

Any local business, university, or non-profit can contact the City Planning Department to request use of Binghamton's special status, which would allow them to earn extra points toward competitive federal grant programs.
