Improvements to Hickories Could Include Dog Park

Hickories Park will be getting some improvements this fall thanks
to a $100,000 anonymous donation.

Owego Town Supervisor Donald Castellucci Jr. says it will go towards a sewer project that will extend the sewer system throughout the park's campsites.

Meanwhile, discussions over another improvement that could soon be made to Hickories are in their final stages. A dog park could be part of the landscape as soon as next spring.

Castellucci says the Owego Dog Owners Group approached the board about eight months ago about creating a designated area for the animals. The group is now in the process of applying to become a nonprofit and the park would be funded by by Adam Weitsman in memory of his sister.

Castellucci says they are still ironing out some details but expects the board to approve the project.

" I know its a successful in other communities and there seems to be a call for it and I haven't had really too many negatives on it so I think it's gonna enhance the community, enhance the park, and when people go down they'll have something else they can do there," said Castellucci.

He hopes to have a public hearing and vote on the project this fall. The park will close on September 3rd for renovations and Castellucci hopes they can also being constructing the dog park at that time.
