It was a very happy day for two local soldiers and their families.
Thomas Rome of Kirkwood and Ed Holmberg of Port Crane returned home Tuesday after spending the last eight months in Afghanistan and the previous three training in Mississippi.
The two members of the National Guard spent their time overseas advising border police along the Iranian border.
Both were overjoyed to be reunited with their families.
"You really can't put it into words, it's hard to describe what it's like. You just don't know when you walk off the plane and you walk through the airport and everybody is there and your wife is there and to hold her again after 11 months is just amazing," said Ed Holmberg of the New York Army National Guard.
Both men are spending their first day home relaxing with the family.
Holmberg says that he's also looking forward to seeing his dogs because he knows that they've missed him as well.
