Walters streak ends as B-Mets lose

READING, PA - The Reading Fightin Phils scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, including the game-winner on a wild pitch by Jeff Walters, to beat the Binghamton Mets, 7-6, on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. The B-Mets overcame an early deficit with a two-out, four-run rally in the seventh, but allowed three unanswered runs in their fifth walk-off loss of the season

The B-Mets handed a 6-5 advantage to Walters in ninth. Pitching for the first time in five days, the righty recorded the first out on one pitch before surrendering a single to Matt Tolbert and a double to Sebastian Valle. Following an intentional walk to load the bases, Anthony Hewitt tied the game with an infield single. Walters spiked the next pitch he threw past Blake Forsythe, allowing Valle to score from third with the game-winning run.

Welcoming in the B-Mets for the first and only time in 2013, the Fightin Phils grabbed the lead in the first against starter Erik Goeddel. Following Albert Cartwright's leadoff single, Zach Collier threaded an RBI triple down the right-field line.

Binghamton answered back in the second against Jesse Biddle. Darrell Ceciliani reached on a fielder's choice and moved into scoring position with his 27th stolen base of the season. Blake Forsythe made the risk worth it by lining an RBI single off Biddle's side. The drive ricocheted into right field, allowing Ceciliani to come home with the tying run. Biddle remained in the game and retired Goeddel to end the inning.

The Fightin Phils responded quickly and retook the lead with three runs in the second. Valle bounced a double off the right-field wall and scored two batters later on a groundout. Maikel Franco capped the inning by ripping a two-out, two-run double inside the third base bag, kicking Reading's lead to three.

The B-Mets began their comeback with a single score in the third. Danny Muno began the inning with walk, stole second and came home when center fielder Albert Cartwright bobbled Josh Rodriguez's single up the middle. Biddle bounced back after the hit and posted three shutout innings to end his night.

After two rocky innings to start his night, Goeddel finished strong, tossing shutout frames into the sixth. Ryan Fraser took over with two outs and notched the final out of the inning.

Biddle also ended on a high note, capping his night with three scoreless innings. The left-hander retired 11 of the final 13 B-Mets he faced before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the sixth.

Trailing 4-2, Binghamton saved their offensive magic for the Fightin Phils bullpen in the seventh. Colby Shreve collected the first two outs, but allowed to two to reach on a walk and single. Cory Vaughn cut the deficit to one and ended Shreve's night with an RBI single.

Southpaw Austin Wright was summoned from the pen to face Allan Dykstra. After taking two out of the zone, Dykstra launched a towering drive over the right-field wall for a go-ahead, three-run homer. The long-ball was Dykstra's 19th of the season and first since July 22.

Reading cut away at the two-run hole in the eighth against reliever Chase Huchingson, loading the bases on a single, a hit batter and fielding error. With the bases full, Jim Murphy launched a high fly ball to centerfield. Alonzo Harris made a spectacular over-the-shoulder grab on the warning track to rob Murphy of game-breaking hit and fired back in to double-off Maikel Franco at first. Hewitt scampered home ahead of the final out on the play to make it 6-5, setting the stage for Reading's theatrics in the ninth.

Juan Sosa (3-2) kept the B-Mets off the board in the eighth and ninth to earn the victory. Walters (3-2) suffered his third blown save of the season and first loss since May 24.

The B-Mets (75-47) continue their three-game series against the Fightin Phils on Wednesday at 7:05 PM. LHP Darin Gorski takes the hill against RHP Brody Colvin.
