National Night Out

The first Tuesday in August has become known as a National Night Out against crime in many towns and cities.

Many towns in the Southern Tier are also honoring the day with events that introduce residents to first responders.

Vestal hosted its annual Cruise In and Cook Out Tuesday night where fire, EMS and police were on hand to offer safety tips and talk about ways to reduce crime.  There were also plenty of food and cars on display for residents to take a look at.

Organizers say Tuesday's event also serves as a way to help kids become familiar with men and woman who might save their lives.

"They're able to go inside the car and the truck.  The fire trucks the ambulance the police car.  They can look at the equipment," said Vestal Detective Sergeant Christopher Streno.

"There's a lot of little kids that are afraid of their suits and this might help them not be so afraid should they ever need their help," said Colleen Eberly of Apalachin.

National Night Out was established as a nonprofit in the 1980s to promote involvement in crime prevention activities and police-community partnerships.
