State Warns Residents of 'Smishing Scam'
8/5/2013 (Updated 7:04:11 PM)The state is warning about a "smishing scam" in which entities send you texts claiming to be financial institutions, utility companies, or cell phone providers They also send you a phone number or link.
When you reply, you'll be asked to share personal information. The state says legitimate messages from these companies will never ask for personal information.
You should contact your service provider to see if they sent out the alert, and you can forward your texts to 7726 (which spells "spam" on your phone) to have your cell phone company block that number. That service is free.
