Local Teen Brings Christmas in July to Philippines

(Source: Jason Weinstein)

16-year-old Granville Moore spent last week in the Philippines helping his team of 20 youth hand out six thousand shoe boxes of gifts to some of the country's poorest children.

"Some of the stuff would be toiletries, soap. They go crazy over soap. And toothbrushes and toothpaste," said Moore.

It was Moore's first trip overseas after 12 years of packing shoe boxes of gifts for Samaritan's Purse, and international Christian relief program. He and his family packed 250 this year, and estimates he's packed 1,800 in his life.

"We look for toothbrushes to go on sale, stuffed animals, and especially coloring books," said Moore.

Granville's family got him involved in the effort when he was four to honor the memory of his younger brother, who died in childbirth.

"For us thinking of the children opening the boxes and the smiles, that really helps us immensely," said Louise Moore, Granville's
mother.

The family redoubled it's efforts three years later when Granville's younger sister suffered the same fate.

"Our loss as bad as it is, and it still hurts to this day, but we really feel like there might be good happening because of it," said Louise Moore.

An idea confirmed by the reaction of the kids.

"Smiles and laughter. It's the greatest thing from them. They run up and they don't know what to say," said Granville Moore.
