BCC's New Class One of the First in New Dorms Next Year

The incoming class at Broome Community College will be the first to enjoy the option of dorms as on-campus housing is expected to be open in September of 2014.

This time next year, some of the students at their orientation Tuesday will be moving onto campus rather that just visiting for the day.

"We'll have 300 brand new students signed up to live in  the residents halls," said BCC President Dr. Kevin Drumm.

For students ready to leave the next, next year can't come soon enough.

"I would love to live on campus dorms.  It's like a new life, gives you a lot more freedom and responsibility," said Chenango Forks graduate Thomas Egglason.

While for others, they feel there's just no place like home.

"I guess in some ways, I'm just more of a mama's boy," said Chenango Forks graduate Sethiah Lake.

Drumm said the new residents halls will be a whole new experience for the school.

"We'll have different focused orientation for residents students and that will be entirely new to SUNY Broome," said Drumm.

A lot has been changing at BCC.  Tuesday was an example of those changes with a new approach to freshman orientation.

"What we are doing for the first time is having some focused smaller orientations throughout the summer rather than inviting everyone on one day," said Drumm.

Having smaller groups allow students, like Lake and Egglason, to have a more customized experience, which is what drew these aspiring Liberal Arts majors to BCC in the first place.

"(This school) helps you get to other steps in your life, and get into any career you want," said Lake.

"It's a smaller place, everyone here is friendly.  They can give you attention and focus on you, it's really personal" said Egglason.

Which is exactly what SUNY Broome wants its future alumni to feel.

There will be two more orientation sessions on August 13th and 15th.
