Union Reps Join Talks of Endicott Police Merger Study
7/29/2013 (Updated 10:56:16 PM)Union representatives from both the Broome County Sheriff's Office and the Endicott Police Department were invited Monday to join the committee studying a possible merge of the two departments.
The committee met for the third time on Monday. This is the second time the public has been invited to listen in.
A draft of a possible merger calls for 28 Endicott Police officers to be assigned to the Sheriff's Office. However, as the group looked over the contract draft Monday afternoon, concerns were raised over whether all 28 officers would merge or if some would consider early retirement.
Committee member and Deputy Mayor Dave Baker says the amount of officers that would make the transition could make or break the decision on whether to merge the two departments.
"It would be at least a year assuming we could hire 5-15 people immediately so that's a tough one that's really going to be one of the issues that cause us some interesting consternation I think," said Baker.
Another meeting will be held August 12 at 4 p.m.
