Jets QB Battle is more of a "friendly competition"

CORTLAND -- Coming into training camp this year, many Jets fans worried it would just be another quarterback circus, but for rookie Geno Smith and incumbent Mark Sanchez, that's hardly the case. The two QBs define the term "friendly competition."

"I appreciate Mark for what he does for me on and off the field. He helps me, he teaches me. He helps me get acclimated to the pro game and we have a really good relationship. When we're on the field we encourage one another but we also compete," said Smith when asked about his relationship with Sanchez.

The reason for the help? Sanchez says, "When I came in as a rookie, Kellen Clemens and I were competing but Kellen wasn't shy if I were to ask him a question, to help me out. That's the way I learned. So, that's kind of just the way I was brought up in this league."

His coach is happy to hear it. Rex Ryan offered, "We need 53 at their top, and if you can help somebody that is competing with you or whatever, that's what we want. That's the kind of mentality we need to have throughout our football team."

Ryan also added that that's just the kind of person Mark Sanchez is.
