Former Mayor of Owego Passes Away

Former Owego Mayor Edward Arrington died suddenly Wednesday.

He was Owego's first African American mayor serving the village for six years.

Arrington, a Democrat, was the mayor during both floods of 2006 and 2011.

On top of serving on the village board he volunteered as an ambulance driver and in the fire police for owego fire department.  those who knew him well say his service to the community went beyond politics.

"Ed Arrington optimizes what the term civic duty means. He more than optimized that he never gave up,"  said Chair of Tioga County Democratic Committee, Patricia Bence.

"The thing of it is Ed as a person he was just a very nice guy with a very nice heart and just wanted to help the village do better. And he really worked hard at doing that," said Mayor of Owego Kevin Millar.

Millar says Arrington spearheaded beautification projects like the Riverwalk and funding for small businesses in the village. Arrington was 70 years old.
