Cohoon, Walters join record books as B-Mets take rubber match 6-3

BINGHAMTON, NY  On a record setting night, the Binghamton Mets scored four runs in the sixth inning and beat the Reading Fightin Phils, 6-3 on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. In the win, Mark Cohoon tossed seven innings and became the all-time franchise leader in innings pitched, and Jeff Walters matched a single-season record with his 28th save of the year.

It was Reading who struck the scoreboard first; Derrick Mitchell blasted a solo home run with one out in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half, Binghamton replied with a run of their own against David Buchanon. Alonzo Harris led off with a double, and Darrell Ceciliani lined a double past first base to tie the game. That knock extended Cecilianis hit streak to 17 games.

Reading re-took the lead in the second inning. After the first two outs of the inning were made, Anthony Hewitt doubled to right field. He stole third base and then scored when a ground ball to Josh Rodriguez at second base was misplayed. In the third, Maikel Franco drove in another run with an RBI groundout as the Fightin Phils took a 3-1 lead into the fourth inning.

The B-Mets began the chip away at the lead in the bottom of the fourth. After Ceciliani led off with an infield single, he came around to score when Xorge Carrillo grounded out.

The first mark of history of the night was made in the top of the fifth inning. With one out and nobody on base, Cohoon retired Buchanon on a groundball to become Binghamtons all-time franchise leader in innings pitched. He passed Jose Sanchez, who threw 350.1 innings for Binghamton from 2007  2009.

Buchanon held onto the one-run Reading lead until the sixth inning. Wilfredo Tovar led the inning off with a solo home run over the left-centerfield fence. The second home run of the season for Tovar tied the game at three. Carrillo followed with a double, and back-to-back walks loaded the bases with nobody out. Reading sent for the bullpen, and brought in Kyle Simon in a tough spot.

Simons first batter was Rodriguez, and the righty uncorked a wild pitch allowing Carrillo to score for the go-ahead run. Binghamton went on to score two more runs on a two-run single from Rhyne Hughes, as they batted around and scored four runs.

After allowing single runs to score in the first three innings, Cohoon only allowed two base hits over his final four frames. He left the game after seven innings, and was in line for his fifth win of the season. Chasen Bradford threw a perfect eighth, and Jeff Walters did the same in the ninth to seal the win. It was Walters 28th save of the season, tying him with Jerrod Riggan for the most in a single season in B-Met history. Riggan completed the feat in 2000.

The win put Binghamton at a new high water mark at 26 games over .500 (64-38). They continue their week-long homestand on Thursday as they begin a five-game series against the Trenton Thunder. Darin Gorski takes the mound for the B-Mets on Thursday night against LHP Nik Turley for Trenton.
