Sherburne Cleans Up Again From Flooding

(Source: Kate Thornton)

A sign in front of Gilligan's Island Ice Cream Shop on Main Street in Sherburne reads, "Rain Rain Go Away."  As the song continues... "come again another day", but that's the last thing anyone dealing with the flooded homes in the village of Sherburne wants.

"Everybody is fed up with it. It seems like it gets worse and worse every year," said Sherburne resident Anna Yacono.

Its been an ongoing clean-up process for Yacono and her family.

First, major flash flooding along the Chenango River last Thursday flooded many homes.

Then Monday night, another round of heavy rain caused the Chenango River to rise again, and higher.

"Starting from last Thursday, when we flooded, and of course we got up to 4 feet in the backyard. Went down in the basement, 3-4 pumps going, trying to keep it out of the basement, and then we got cleaned up from that, and then it started all over again," said Yacono.

Just down Route 12, the Chenango River has become a part of the landscape in Sherburne resident Nova Frair's backyard.

"Several times I've tried to sell it for water front boat access only, hahaha," said Frair.

Kidding aside, Frair's home has lived in its dwelling for generations.  And, a little water, even a lot of water, isn't going to change that.

"Its a family home. We're happy, so we just wait until the water recedes completely," said Frair.

And soon, the village will be ready to celebrate the nation's birthday.

Mayor Bill Acee said the 4th of July celebration is still on for this Thursday.

"We have bands coming, and fireworks ready to shoot off, and frankly we need a party. It's been a little discouraging."

Acee said he feels the worse of the flooding is finally behind them, and applauds how the community has come together in this time of need.
