Police Hope To See Pawn Shop Regulations Reduce Crime

In 2012,  2,641 crimes were reported to Binghamton Police.  Over 2,300 of those were property theft related.

Binghamton police are investigating a string of burglaries on the City's Southside.  Along with advising residents to lock their doors and not to leave personal belongings in their cars, Chief Joe Zikuski says he would also like to see the county legislatures put more regulations on pawn shops.

He would like the legislature to enact regulations that require store owners to keep pawned goods a certain period of time before they can be sold and also require store owners to take down the identity of those selling items.

"Hopefully it will pass the county legislature sooner rather than later, because if these kids-- and some of them aren't just kids, we're talking 17,18,19--if they have no place to get rid of the stuff, then obviously those numbers are going to go down also," said Binghamton Police Chief Joe Zikuski.

"We haven't made a standing.  We haven't made a decision.  We've had some discussion with Binghamton Police and the Sheriff's Department on this.  But, we are not yet ready to name a position on this issue as of yet," said 2nd District County Legislator Scott Baker
