BU Softball's Bump named AE Scholar Athlete
6/27/2013 (Updated 6:10:35 PM)VESTAL, N.Y. Junior second baseman Jessica Bump has been named the America East Conferences Softball Scholar-Athlete for the 2012-13 academic year. She earned the accolade by virtue of her outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments.
Bump, who was named first-team all-conference, finished the season ranked fifth in the America East in batting (.349), second with 10 home runs and fourth with 36 RBI. She also led the conference with 46 runs, five triples, a .476 on-base percentage and a .671 slugging percentage.
In the classroom, Bump is a two-time America East All-Academic selection. She was inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society in 2012 and has been named to the America East Commissioners Honor Roll three straight years.
Jessica is definitely deserving of this recognition, head coach Michelle Burrell said. She works extremely hard both on the field and in the classroom. She has made such an impact on our program.
Bump joins fellow Bearcat Ruben Haggai (mens tennis) in earning the spring sport honor. In all, BU produced three Scholar-Athletes during the 2012-13 year (Grace Vickers, volleyball).
Since joining the America East Conference in 2001, Binghamton has posted 33 Scholar-Athlete selections. Bump is the first softball player, however, to earn the award.
Binghamton finished the 2013 season 30-17 (14-4 AE). The Bearcats finished with their highest win total since 1995 and were the host team for this years America East Tournament.
