Police Comment on String of Car Break-Ins

Binghamton Police are addressing a recent string of car break-ins on the Southside of the City.

They have been happening between 10 p.m. and the early morning hours.

Police say they have increased patrols in the area and say the public can help reduce the amount of break-ins by not leaving valuables in their cars and locking their doors.

Last year there were 555 burglaries and over 1,400 larcenies in the City as well as 46 motor vehicle thefts.

Although property crime is high in the City, Chief Joe Zikuski says the number of  violent crimes are relatively low.

"If you compare us around the state, as far as violent crime, we're pretty good and even of our violent crime. Very little of it is fire arm related.  So overall, this is a very safe city.  It's a great place to live and obviously we're making every effort to make it safer because we are never going to be satisfied," said Binghamton Police Chief Joe Zikuski.
