Susquehanna Sojourn comes through town
6/10/2013 (Updated 10:54:11 PM)Dozens of canoeists are paddling through time, down the Susquehanna River.
Forty-five paddlers kicked off the Susquehanna Sojurn on Saturday in Great Bend, PA, and made a stop in Binghamton Monday morning. The trip will take them to Owego before they head back to Pennsylvania, ending in Sugar Run on Saturday. The group will study the history of the riverbank, including Native American culture. Other, more current, topics include FEMA flood recovery and Marcellus Shale development.
The paddlers say actually being in the river gives them a greater appreciation for the waterway.
"First we were in the river down below then we walked up across the Chenango bridge. It was exciting to see what we had just done but there' ssomething about being down there on it and a part of it," said paddler Martha Lawrenz.
The eight-day sojurn will cover a total of 97 miles.
