Are those halos or gold medals? Saints make history

(Source: Jeremy Donovan)

BINGHAMTON -- In a fitting end to a successful season, it was Patrick Gosney's pitch that was popped up and caught by Michael Korchack to clinch the first ever baseball title for Seton Catholic Central.  To make the moment even more special, it was the first ever State Title for any boy's team in school history.

The stars aligned for the Saints on Saturday as they beat Geneseo 9-0 at Broome Community College, thanks in part to a couple of southpaws.

Despite having talented players over the years, no SCC team was able to accomplish what this year's did.  But this year's team has what any championship team needs, chemistry.

"They had a lot of talent, but on top of that, they believed in themselves and they worked really hard in practice and they really got along well together," said Saints Head Coach Jim Miller.

Perhaps, the most important piece of that chemistry was between Seton's dual lefty aces, Gosney, a senior and Korchak, a junior.  The two always paired up to throw in practice and were always the last off the field.  That didn't stop them from using friendly competition to get the job done.

"We were trying to battle, and throw the most shutouts all year going back and forth," Korchak said.  "I don't know who won, but it's the greatest ever."

"The whole year we've been doing this, right here, having 5-hit shutouts," Gosney said.  "Just shutout after shutout, and we just kept it up all year."

In the regular season Gosney registered a 1.20 ERA in 35 innings and Korchak allowed just two unearned runs in 36.2 innings.  Shutouts were definitely the theme all year for the Saints as neither ace allowed a run during the state playoffs, including Korchak's 4-hit shutout of no. 1 ranked Pierson-Bridgehampton in the State Semi-Finals.  They were constantly trying to one-up their counterpart.

"They bonded really well in practice, in game situations, and that really helped each other," Miller said.

With Gosney set to graduate in a few weeks, Korchak is ready to fill in that spot, and use what he's learned from his throwing partner.

"He's shown me a lot on the mound from the left side: pick-offs, everything.  I'll take it as long as I can," Korchak said.

Including Gosney, the Saints are graduating eight seniors, including five starters.  But Miller says it's far too early to count next year's squad out just yet.

"The tank isn't empty, we graduate five starters, but we've got guys ready to fill in, and there's a couple other guys on JV that should help out," he said.

Miller expects sophomores, catcher Tyler Krowiak and shortstop/ pitcher David George to step up to fill those empty gaps, and also lefty freshman pitcher Matt Ogozaly is expected to turn some heads.
