Mets demote three, including two former B-Mets

QUEENS -- Since the four game sweep of the Yankees two weeks ago, the Mets have since been swept twice.  Both coming at the hands of the worst team in the NL East, the Miami Marlins.

Sunday's 8-4 extra inning loss seemed to be the last straw for Mets brass as three players were demoted after the game.  Outfielder Mike Baxter and former Binghamton Mets Ike Davis and Robert Carson will all be packing their bags and headed for Triple-A Las Vegas.

Davis's demotion comes as little surprise to fans, as their once promising first basemen has struggled through the first two months of the season each of the last two years.  Despite turning his 2012 season around, ending with 32 HR and a .227 average, Davis has just 30 hits with a .161 average this year including just 5 home runs.

Baxter meanwhile, is batting above the Mendoza Line at .212 but has 20 strikeouts in just 85 at bats.

Middle Reliever Robert Carson has barely had time to unpack his suitcase in several calls up and down the past few seasons.  This year with New York, opponents are hitting .268 against the hard throwing lefty.  In just 18.0 innings pitched Carson has an ERA of 8.50 and is third on the team in home runs allowed with 8, only starters Jeremy Hefner and Dillon Gee have allowed more.

Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson gave no indication that this is an issue with coaching staff and that all the focus is on the players.

The mass demotion comes a day after the Mets designated Rick Ankiel for assignment, effectively ending the pitcher-turned-outfielders short tenure in blue and orange.  To fill the void, Kirk Nieuwenheis was called up from Las Vegas.

All signs indicate that the replacement first baseman will not be Lucas Duda or Daniel Murphy, who have both played first before.  Rather, that position is expected to be filled by a player being promoted: likely another former B-Met, Josh Satin.

Davis, who has been the primary first baseman since 2010 has been criticized for his mechanics at the plate.  Teammates and management expect him to regain his confidence and work out the mechanical issues in his swing.  The demotion, for now, is temporary.

The Mets confirm that the three players being called up to fill roster positions are former B-Mets Josh Satin and Josh Edgin, and also OF Collin Cowgill who was the opening day starter in centerfield for New York.
