Scholarship In Memory Of Fallen Heroes

OWEGO -- Passing along the legacy of giving back to the community and honoring fallen heroes is the meaning behind a new scholarship.

Thursday night, the wives of fallen Owego firefighters Steve Gavin and Matthew Porcari discussed a scholarship opportunity at the Owego Apalachin School Board Meeting.

This weekend a golf tournament will be held to support a $2000  for a award for a graduating Owego Free Academy senior who wants to pursue an education in the first responder field.

Tournament organizers say its a way to keep the memory of the fallen firefighters alive.

"The opportunity to give back and create something that will be lasting, that's the scholarship thats the training facility.  Those things will go on long after the initial losses so we want to keep that memory alive," said John Loftus, Golf Tournament Co-Chair.

"Hopefully they can go back to their own community or some other community and know they had something behind them to give back because that was Matt's big thing.  Pay it forward pay it back," he added.

65 teams made up of golfers from all over the United States will tee off at the links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin on Saturday.

The tournament also raises money for the building and operating costs of the Owego Fire Department Training Facility.

The inaugural scholarship winner will be announced at graduation this year.
