BU Soccer's Hughes Earns 2012-13 America East Mens Sportsmanship Award

VESTAL, N.Y.Junior back Robbie Hughes has been named the male recipient of the 2012-13 America East Sportsmanship Award. The announcement was made at the conferences annual awards dinner on Tuesday night in Portland, Maine.

To be nominated for the America East Sportsmanship Award, an individual or team must have demonstrated consistently the values of caring, fairness, civility, honesty, integrity and responsibility in his or her daily participation in intercollegiate athletics. Hughes is now automatically eligible for the NCAA Sportsmanship Award, which the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct will determine in July.

Hughes transferred to Binghamton from Syracuse prior to the 2012 season. He was a starting back and a team leader from the start of preseason.

Hughes led by example with his committed, outspoken personality, which compelled him to pursue good sportsmanship on the field. In his second game with the Bearcats, Hughes was faced with the difficult task with facing his former team. He met the situation with professionalism, greeting his former teammates in a gentlemanly manner while playing his heart out for his new team.
Hughes leadership continued to grow during the season and showed with the way he handled his teammates. Hughes paid close attention to the attitudes of each of the members of the team and was able to diffuse several situations.

What a terrific honor for Robbie to receive this award, head coach Paul Marco said. He is a fierce competitor who has tremendous respect for the game and for our opponents.

Hughes is the second America East Sportsmanship winner from Binghamton since the award was established in 2006. Rachel Laws of the womens basketball team was the female winner for that inaugural year.
